"I love pastel painting for its freshness and versatility, and it's a great change of pace from oils ... Kathy and her mother have modeled for me many times. Being Apache, the mother makes their clothing and beadwork in Apache style. "Springwater (Kathy's Indian name) will soon turn thirteen, and I think of this composition as a mother-daughter talk--aptly titled 'Teaching Her the Ways'. -Leslie B. DeMille

DeMille's reputation as a fine painter of Western art is reflected in the numerous awards he has garnered over the years. His commissions include portraits of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.
